Regarding an Amazon tablet (or, bringing content to an experience fight)

There’s been talk of an Amazon super-Kindle running Android OS since… about 5 minutes after Steve Jobs left the stage following the original iPad introduction. Now that Amazon has launched their Appstore (TM in contention), that talk is heating up again. And why not? It’s an obvious play. I’d be surprised if Amazon hasn’t had one in the labs for a while now (just like I would have been surprised if Facebook hadn’t been working on a phone…) Amazon has content like iTunes, including (in the US at least — and more on that in a moment), ebooks, ···

TiPb Asks: Are you tempted by the PlayBook or an Android Honeycomb tablet?

If it were possible for the iPad to own 138% of the tablet market it probably would, but competing devices have already launched like the Motorola Xoom, are about to launch like the BlackBerry Playbook, or will be launching later in the year like the HP TouchPad and more Android Honeycomb tablets. Some will be smaller, with 7 or 8-inch screens. Some will be slightly bigger with 10.1-inch screens. Most will have Adobe Flash support to varying degrees. They’ll have more ports (and not require camera kits or AV adapter dongles). They’ll have we···
iPad 2 vs. BlackBerry PlayBook browser battle

As part of his BlackBerry PlayBook review, CrackBerry.com‘s Kevin Michaluk put RIM’s new tablet browser one-on-one against Apple’s iPad 2. When we put the PlayBook head to head against the iPad 2 in a browser shootout (see below), we saw pretty comparable page load times but did notice on websites where there were flash-based advertisements present, this would slow down the PlayBook by a few seconds while the iPad 2 would serve up a faster loading static image. Disabling flash evened out the load times.Check out the video after the break and···

PatentlyApple has uncovered some interesting patent applications from Apple involving new multitouch gestures and smart bezels aimed at making interaction more simple and gestures more memorable.Apple’s patent introduces us to mid-drag gestures, microgestures within gestures, and other gesture modification motions performed contiguously within an overall gesture (i.e., without losing contact with the touch-sensitive input surface during the gesture) to provide intuitive ways to interact with a user interface for varying purposes, such as mod···
iPad competitors: Will the true multitasking please stand up?

One of the most persistent complaints levied against the iPhone and iPad were/are the lack of multitasking. This, of course, has always been silly. However, now that BlackBerry QNX PlayBook>, Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets like Xoom, and HP webOS 3.0′s TouchPad are set to launch, “true multitasking” is again finding its way into the bullet points of competitively positioned slide decks and ad campaigns. It’s still silly but it’s also more complicated now.Does iOS offer “true multitasking”, does its competitors? Let’s take a look, after the br···

The early iPad 2 reviews are in and as expected it’s getting its fair share of “evolutionary not revolutionary” and “a good thing even better” takes. We’ve already told you what key features might make you want to upgrade from iPad 1 to iPad 2, or to consider an iPad 2 as your first tablet. To hear what everyone else thinks, follow on after the break…Joshua Topolsky: It might frustrate the competition to hear this, but it needs to be said: the iPad 2 isn’t just the best tablet on the market, it feels like the only tablet on the market. As mu···

Apple’s Steve Jobs took the stage immediately today as part of the iPad 2 event with 15 million sold and 90% market share. That’s more than every tablet PC ever sold.Jobs said it “flummoxed” competitors. While some made fun of Jobs calling iPad magical, and others complained about the price, Jobs said to “ask our competitors now”. (Referring to the difficulty in matching iPad’s price point.)Jobs showed off 65,000 apps for iPad and 100 — and they were being generous, he says — for Android 3.0 Honeycomb and then went into a video of Apple exec···

BlackBerry maker RIM has just announced that they’ll be providing a way for developers to package, sign, and distribute Android apps for the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook. (They’ll also be able to develop BlackBerry Java and, soon, C/C++ apps). iPad has a huge head start, but this could prove an interesting way to mitigate that lead:“The BlackBerry PlayBook is an amazing tablet. The power that we have embedded creates one of the most compelling app experiences available in a mobile computing device today,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and C···
